[History] Ep.1 – Richard Turner

In the history of Card Magic, we can come accross many great names. Today, we chose one in particular. He is an excellent card manipulator, renowned for his ability to fool even casino surveillance specialists, table game protection experts… and even Penn and Teller with his skills!

Why in this History series?

With his skills alone, Richard Turned should be in this little series. But if we chose him, it’s not just about his incredible skills with card. It’s because of all his accomplishments: card, martial arts, shark hunting, and… Richard Turner has been blind since his childhood. Given his accomplishments, I think we’ll all agree that Richard Tuner own his names in the History of Magic!

Who is he ?

Born in San Diego in 1954 (June 16), he is an American expert card manipulator. He won many prizes during his career. In 2014, he has been honored with the “Close-up Magician of the Year” award from the AMA (Academy of Magic Art). You can spot his name in the Hall of Fame Page from Magic Castle

His life inspired people around the globe. As stated on his website: He has entertained and entranced millions of people, including celebrities such as Johnny Carson, Bob Hope, Secretary of State Colin Powell, actor Brad Pitt, sports legend Muhammad Ali, and many more.

Despite the odd and his blindness, he has a strong mind and was able to overcome all the challenges. In 2017, a documentary explored his unique life. Called “Dealt”, the movie earned awards at the SXSW Festival 2017.

Winner of the SXSW Audience Award for Documentary Feature, Dealt is the inspiring story of sixty-two year old Richard Turner who is renowned as one of the world’s greatest card magicians, yet he is completely blind.  In this documentary, Richard traces his journey from his troubled childhood, when he began losing his vision, to present day as he relentlessly pursues perfection while struggling with the reality that his biggest weakness might also be his greatest strength.
