Your First Time

Your First Time

Grey

I will never forget my first gig. It was for a bar I had previously worked for which makes it easier to remember. Another bar in town was having their annual Christmas party at my buddy’s bar and since he knew I was a magician with mad chops he hired me to perform and entertain. Yeah, my first gig came from those I already knew and had already connected with. This post will be discussing how to get gigs; my own first gig will be discussed in a later post if there is enough interest. There probably won’t be but I’m putting it out there since I have never seen anyone actually talk about it.

In my first post for this site that you will find here, we discussed in my opinion the best way to become a magician without becoming the creepy awkward person everyone questions knowing. Go read it and then come back here because these posts go hand in hand.

I can wait…

OK if you really did not listen to me then it’s your loss.

A gig in any context is something you are hired for. You would know if you have been hired because it will sound something like “hey I want you to perform for my Mom’s birthday” or “I’ll hire you to do an hour of your finest parlour material.” In any case you should know what being hired for anything sounds like. My previous boss asked me because we are best buds and he knew I was top-notch entertainment. The hidden secret here is that if you are employed already and they know you do magic then it should be EXTREMELY EASY to pick up a gig.

It’s funny because someone told me that it was not proper gig hire and I looked at them like they were the dumbest person I had ever spoken to. “Oh you got your gig because they already hired you to work for them.” Good job mate, thank you for pointing out that I was already hired previously because I can actually get a job outside of whoring entertainment. If a person already has employed you and you have truly networked a relationship then getting a gig for anything is cake. If you get hired for something and you entertain also, you can get hired for that too and it is the better solution then creating a shit website for yourself and some business cards with your 5 out of 10 face on them.

A kid who kept telling me he was a magician never learned any of the above. He has an ugly website, ugly business cards, and didn’t want to change any of it. He couldn’t misdirect and the sleight of hand was nonexistent. My girlfriend knows all this and she doesn’t even do magic. Technical skill needs to be a thing before you call yourself a magician. Now he’s off in la la land thinking he’s going places even though he can’t perform for peanuts and I recently found out he was disqualified from a competition. It’s a sad day when you somehow manage to take mediocre art and disqualify yourself.  Just don’t be this kid.

Lets recap because that tiny rant got me way off the road. Rants will be saved for later. If you are already hired for something then you are in and you can land the gig. The first step is you need to know how to build a genuine relationship but we will assume you can do that. I mean, I would hope so for humanities sake.

I got to be done with this post because I have other stuff to do. I will be travelling across the world soon as I was hired by a company as their Foreign Expert. I will be landing many gigs too.
